❋ Intentional Structure

In 2024, we designed an advanced doula traineeship that paired experienced doula mentors with recently trained doulas. Trainees also received didactic training in business and perinatal health issues. Both trainees and mentors were provided with stipends commensurate with industry standards.

❋ Collaboration for Care

We connected doula teams to 34 families birthing at UNMH who desired doula support and provided free comprehensive care to these families, including prenatal, birth, and postpartum support.

❋ Support Through The Journey

All trainees finished the program and emerged as confident, skilled doulas ready to build sustainable practices and expand access to equitable, community-based birth support across New Mexico.

❋ Thriving Birthworkers

Currently, seven out of 11 doulas have been certified and are actively taking clients, while the remaining doulas are in the process of obtaining certification. Three program graduates are already registered to serve Medicaid clients, and two others are in the process of completing their registration.

  • "I want to thank you all so much for the Traineeship Program. It’s been a long-term dream of mine to pursue doula work full-time. The program and mentorship truly allowed me to do so! I am so grateful to all of you and the offering you created."
